The late Dr. Mendenhall served in the Navy in the Korean War and obtained a Ph.D. in Statistics at North Carolina State University. After receiving his Ph.D, he was a professor in the Mathematics Department at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania before moving to Gainesville in 1963 where he was the first chairman of the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida.
Dr. Mendenhall published articles in some of the top statistics journals, such as Biometrika and Technometrics; however, he is more widely known for his prolific textbook career. He authored or co-authored approximately 13 Statistics textbooks and several books about his childhood.
We have all known Vasco da Gama, the inventor of the road to India, since childhood. But we have always thought of him as a hero. After reading this book by Satyen Sen, I realized how big a mistake we have made. Arab merchants, European merchants came to India in search of spices.
India was then the best in the production and trade of this food flavoring spice. So the Portuguese, the Dutch and the last British came running after him smelling it. Throughout the ages, the Mir Jafars, with their extreme treachery, gave the opportunity to the foreign merchants to establish bases on their own land.
Thus, before the fifteenth century, the Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama came to Calicut, India, to trade as a merchant. But the greed for spices and the greed for expansion of the empire they wanted to control the waterways and land routes. In its continuation, one battle after another was going on at sea under the leadership of Vasco da Gama!
All Muslims, including Arab merchants, had poison in their eyes, so they killed Muslims indiscriminately. Hundreds of innocent Muslims died in their hatred of this religion. And Hindus or others saw this. However, Hindu-Muslim relations in the Calicut region were strong. They fought against the enemies with their immense patriotism. Yet the end was not saved.
One by one, the Portuguese, the Dutch removed them, and the British took turns to persecute them in India. Everything has been looted. Everyone knows the history of the British. The vast history of the book is beautifully presented as a story. It is not possible for me to give a review of such a book. I said as much as I could remember.
This book is very important for those who want to know the poet-philosopher Iqbal and those who are interested in the inside and outside of Iqbal. The book is beautifully arranged in several parts. His lifestyle, relevance and influence, thought-philosophy, literature, book review, poetic talent are discussed in the form of each episode.
And the main moderator of this book was the rich writing of writers of different genres. Among the articles about different aspects of Iqbal’s life, Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi, Professor Abu Jafar, Iqbal’s son. Javid Iqbal’s essays were outstanding. This chapter is named “Life at the bend of the river”. By reading the articles, one can really guess the circumstances of his life, the different turns of life.
He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.
